Blog, blog, blog.
Apparently a blog is an essential of any website. Getting round to writing a blog has been a real hurdle, but now I have pen and paper to hand (old school!)
The topic for my meanderings is Mother and Daughter businesses, as that is exactly what Bowl and Whisk is. I am Janet and I work alongside my daughter, Rachel, in our artisan bakery called Bowl and Whisk.
We have an online shop providing brownies and other tray bakes , often as gifts, for our lovely customers. We also make naked , semi-naked and butter cream wedding cakes and celebration cakes. Corporate gifts and wedding favours are also part of our repertoire, along with desert tables and deserts o order.
Who is the boss?
I say I work alongside my daughter, but the truth is she does nearly all the work and baking. I run alongside as chief supporter, general dogs body and back-up baker.
The system works really well for us. We discuss all aspects of the business from new cake flavours, to presentation ideas and boring business stuff such as accounts and insurance.
We have slightly different skill sets and I think there are plenty of occasions when two brains are better than one.
Love of food
We both enjoy food and are a farming family, so food on every level from the field to the fork is all part of our lives. Rachel took a foodie degree and worked in various food businesses as a new product developer. I have always enjoyed trying new skills such as bottling, preserving, making jams and pickles, making butter and yogurt. Cooking and baking is an important part of our family
On Trend
I can be a bit “old fashioned” as I reference what I have been brought up on, but what mum is not as “on trend” as their daughter. Rachel has to keep me up to speed, but then sometimes old skills have a part to play to solve a problem or produce a solution. So old ideas and new ideas, old skills and new skills all blend together.
Running your own business is not for the faint hearted…its hard at times and you have to put in extra effort all the time to make the business a success. But the satisfaction of a good days work producing delicious quality food is worth the effort.
